Tamsui Fortress and Tamsui University Travelogue

A short MRT ride from Taipei brings you to Tamsui (淡水, Tamsui), where the cool sea breeze blows. Once a port for trade with foreign powers, the area boasts a charming mix of Western architecture and Taiwanese scenery, which became increasingly captivating as you walked.

Our first stop was Fort San Domingo (紅毛城, Tamsui Fortress). This red-brick fortress bears remnants of Dutch rule in the 17th century, followed by Spanish and British rule. Climbing to the top of the fort, you're greeted by sweeping views of the Tamsui River and the mountains across the water. This view immediately brought home the strategic importance of this location. The preserved stone walls and Western-style furniture made it feel like walking through a small museum.

Descending from Hongmao Town and walking toward the riverside, you'll find Tamkang University (淡江大學, Tamkang University). One of the oldest private universities in Taiwan, the campus sits atop a hill, offering sweeping views of the ocean and downtown Tamkang as you ascend. The campus, where students freely roam, is vibrant and vibrant. The blend of historic buildings and modern lecture halls creates a unique atmosphere. The university's landmark, the Zhengxin Pagoda (正心塔), was a must-see.

Tamkang has a much more laid-back atmosphere than downtown Taipei, making it a great place to take a break during your trip. The history of Hongmao Town and the youthful energy of Tamkang University combined to create a full day.
