Ohayogozaimatsu! Tsukiji Honganji Temple is a landmark temple in Tokyo. It was just designated as an Important Cultural Property in December 2014. This temple is different from ordinary Japanese shrines and temples. The place name "Tsukiji" means construction land, which conveys the origin of this land being reclaimed from the sea... Hmm, I learned something new!
In 1934, Chuta Ito imitated ancient Buddhist buildings in India and other parts of Asia and rebuilt the Tsukiji Honin-ji Temple after a fire and earthquake. Because he is famous for his love of monsters and mythical beasts, there are cows, horses, lions, elephants, peacocks, monkeys in the building...
The open morning ritual held here at 7 a.m. every day provides an opportunity for meditation and calming the mind. After the ceremony, you can go to the "Tsumugi" cafe in the temple and enjoy the popular "18-course breakfast". This breakfast combines 16 exquisite side dishes, such as Jiwen fish cake, truffle tamagoyaki, plus clear porridge and miso soup. The porridge is super smooth and delicious. The best part is that you can refill it for free and you can also make more tea. There are many dishes with delicate textures and special flavors, which are definitely worth a try! It not only satisfies the taste buds, but also brings a unique sense of ritual.
But you must make an appointment on the official website. When we arrived, we saw two queues, one for those with reservations, and one for those waiting for a table. When the time came, those with reservations took their seats and ordered their meals immediately. There are very few spots available on site, and I don’t know how long I will have to wait.
