Large-scale mining began in the Houtong area during the early years of Japanese rule. Following the opening of Houtong Station in 1920, the Ruisan Mining Company was established. At its peak, over 500 miners worked daily, making it Taiwan's largest coal mining company.
The Ruisan Mining Coal Processing Plant ceased operations in 1990. After more than 20 years of inactivity, the New Taipei City Government and the Ministry of Culture collaborated to initiate a three-year restoration project. The restoration preserves the original machinery and historical relics. Multimedia footage and photographs are incorporated to provide visitors with a fresh and engaging experience of coal mining history, recreating the glory of the coal processing plant.
Houtong, now a famous cat village, is also a small town steeped in mining history.
