Soulful Lakes & Ancient Towns: My Solo Trip to North Macedonia

#mytraveldiary

I just returned from North Macedonia—a land where Ottoman bazaars, Byzantine churches, and crystal-clear lakes tell stories of empires and poetry. From the dreamy shores of Lake Ohrid to the vibrant capital of Skopje, it was a journey of deep history, affordable adventures, and heartfelt connections.

What Makes North Macedonia Special?

· Lake Ohrid: A UNESCO World Heritage site known as the "Jerusalem of the Balkans" for its ancient churches and stunning beauty.
· Skopje: A capital of quirky contrasts — grand neo-classical statues, an old Ottoman bazaar, and a powerful memorial house.
· Authentic Culture: Heartfelt folk music (like the song "Zbogom Makedonija"), delicious cuisine, and some of the warmest people in the Balkans.
· Budget-Friendly: Incredible value for money — from accommodation to meals and transport.

Why North Macedonia for Solo Travelers?

· Safe & Welcoming: Locals are genuinely hospitable to solo visitors.
· Compact & Navigable: Most key sites are within easy reach.
· Rich in History & Nature: Perfect for culture lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
· Off-the-Beaten-Path: Experience Balkan authenticity without the crowds.

My Solo Itinerary

Days 1-2: Skopje — The Capital of Contrasts

· Explored the Old Bazaar (Čaršija) — one of the oldest and largest in the Balkans.
· Saw the Stone Bridge, "Skopje 2014" statues, and the Memorial House of Mother Teresa.
· Hiked to the Skopje Fortress (Kale) for sunset views over the Vardar River.
· Ate tavče gravče (baked beans) and enjoyed live music in a traditional kafana.

Days 3-4: Lake Ohrid — The Soul of Macedonia

· Took a bus to Ohrid (3 hours from Skopje).
· Wandered the Old Town, visited St. John at Kaneo church (iconic cliffside view), and explored Samuel's Fortress.
· Took a boat trip on the lake or swam in its clear waters.
· Ate Ohrid trout and tried local pearl jewelry.

Day 5: Day Trip to Matka Canyon or Bitola

· Option 1: Visited Matka Canyon (near Skopje) — kayaked or hiked near monasteries and caves.
· Option 2: Traveled to Bitola — explored the Širok Sokak street and ancient Heraclea Lyncestis ruins.

Solo Traveler Tips

1. Learn the Cyrillic Alphabet: Helps with reading signs and menus.
2. Try Local Dishes: Ajvar (pepper spread), kebapi (grilled meat), pastrmajlija (meat pie).
3. Use Buses: Intercity buses are affordable and reliable.
4. Carry Cash: While cards are accepted in cities, cash is king in smaller towns.

Final Thoughts

North Macedonia touched my soul. Whether listening to folk songs in a Skopje kafana, watching the sun set over Lake Ohrid, or sharing stories with locals over strong coffee, I felt a deep sense of belonging. For solo travelers looking for authenticity, beauty, and kindness, this country is a hidden treasure.
