⛩ Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, Osaka — An ancient shrine in a city where trams and history intersect

#0YenTravel2025Autumn

Sumiyoshi Taisha, located in Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, is an ancient shrine with a history spanning approximately 1,800 years, serving as the head shrine of all Sumiyoshi shrines across Japan. Long worshipped as the god of the sea and the guardian deity of navigation, it offers a sense of tranquility and sanctity amid the hustle and bustle of the city.

Stepping inside the shrine grounds, the vermilion-lacquered Taiko Bridge and the cypress-bark-roofed main hall speak of its history. Furthermore, the Hankai Tramway runs right next to the shrine, its red and blue carriages complementing the scenery of the ancient shrine, creating a delightful contrast of time. The sound and sight of the train passing by on the way to worship evokes a sense of nostalgia.
