The World Heritage Site of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei is the head temple of the Tendai sect founded by the great monk Saicho (767-822) on Mount Hiei in the 8th century. The temple covers an area of nearly 1,700 hectares among the dense fir forests in the mountains. It is very vast. In its heyday, it developed into a large temple with more than 3,000 monks studying. Many eminent monks emerged from this area and revitalized the major Buddhist sects in Japan. Today, there are still about 100 halls located here. In the vast temple, the eastern area is called "East Pagoda", the western area is called "West Pagoda", and the northern area is called "Yokokawa". #2024TravelReview
