Wat Mahathat

Atmosphere/Location - Wat Mahathat is located in the Ayutthaya Historical Park. This is the most important religious center in Ayutthaya because it is the temple that enshrines the Phra Borommathat in the heart of the city and is also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch of the Khamwasi sect. It was built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I, Khun Luang Pha Ngua, and was completed during the reign of King Ramesuan. The important point in the temple is the Buddha head in the roots of a tree that is over a hundred years old. The roots of the tree have spread and covered the entire wall, and some of the roots have surrounded the Buddha head. This is another Unseen Thailand spot.
