This unseen temple in Ayutthaya is located at the foot of Pa Than Bridge, east of Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Some chronicles state that the temple was built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I. Later, King Ramesuan ordered the relics of the Lord Buddha to be enshrined beneath the base of the temple's main prang in 1384 BE.
Located at the foot of Pa Than Bridge, east of Wat Phra Si Sanphet, some chronicles state that the temple was built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I. Later, King Ramesuan ordered the relics to be enshrined beneath the base of the temple's main prang in 1384 BE. The prang of Wat Mahathat is considered the first prang constructed during the Ayutthaya period, influenced by the Prang Yom. The lower level is constructed of laterite with new additions, while the upper part is made of brick and mortar. King Prasat Thong ordered the prang to be renovated, extending it higher than before. Later, the spire collapsed, leaving only the porch. Evidence suggests that this prang was a large and exquisitely constructed structure. In 1956, the Fine Arts Department excavated this prang and discovered several ancient artifacts, most notably a stone urn. Inside, there are seven layers of stupas, each made from metal, silver, naga, black wood, red sandalwood, garnet, and gold. The inner layer contains the Buddha's relics and valuable jewelry. These relics are currently enshrined in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. Another interesting feature of the temple is the sandstone Buddha head, which is covered in tree roots. The head fell from the tree during the fall of Ayutthaya, and the roots have covered it. It's a unique and beautiful sight, and I highly recommend it.
