Mae Nang Plueum Temple

Wat Mae Nang Plueum, Ayutthaya Province
🙏It is one of the ancient temples from the Ayutthaya period. The area where the temple is located used to be a Burmese camp.
🧑🏻🦳The legend says that this area used to be the house of Mae Nang Plueum, who lived alone without any children or grandchildren. One day, King Naresuan rowed a boat alone, but then encountered a heavy rainstorm. When he saw that the house was still lit by the light, he went up to the pier to ask for sandalwood water and stay overnight. Mae Nang Plueum did not know who he was, but she welcomed him warmly.
🧑🏻🦳There is also a mention of the king with loyalty, which made King Naresuan very pleased. When he returned to the Grand Palace, not long after, a procession was organized to welcome Mae Nang Plueum to a meal in the palace to show gratitude for her kindness and loyalty. When Mae Nang Plueum passed away, King Naresuan held a proper funeral ceremony for her and built a royal temple called Wat Mae Nang Plueum.
🕍There is a bell-shaped main pagoda. At the base of the pagoda, there are stucco sculptures of lions surrounding Which may be a modification from the popular idea of the elephant-encircled pagoda in Sukhothai art. The chapel is located to the east of the main pagoda. It is a brick building. Inside, there is Luang Pho Khao, the principal Buddha image from the Ayutthaya period. The ordination hall is decorated with various types of pottery, including the Sema leaves from the Rattanakosin period, and the gate arch, which is an ancient temple gate arch.
