Let's visit an ancient Ayutthaya temple, the wonder of the head of a Bodhi tree root.
🎈Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya
🚗Located in Tha Wasukri Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province
🎈Wat Mahathat is a royal temple built during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I (Khun Luang Phra Ngua) in 1374 CE. It was completed during the reign of King Ramesuan. The main prang, enshrining the relics of the Lord Buddha, was built in 1384 CE. Wat Mahathat was also the residence of the Supreme Patriarch at that time and an important venue for various royal ceremonies.
🎈In the past, there was a large prang measuring 25 wa in height. However, during the Second Fall of Ayutthaya, Wat Mahathat was destroyed, leaving only ruins. The large prang collapsed, leaving only the base. The relics of the Lord Buddha were preserved. It has been moved to the National Museum.
🎈Unseen: The sandstone Buddha head, covered by the roots of a Bodhi tree, is an Ayutthaya-style Buddha head. It is believed the head fell from the base of the Bodhi tree during the fall of Ayutthaya. The roots then covered it, making it an unseen wonder within Wat Mahathat.
