One of the first temples that comes to mind in Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chai Mongkol is an ancient temple built during the early Ayutthaya period, during the reign of King Ramathibodi I, also known as King U Thong, the founder of Ayutthaya. Legend has it that in 1900 CE, King U Thong graciously ordered the exhumation of the body of Chao Kaew, who had died of cholera, and cremated it. The site of the cremation was then designated as a monastery, Wat Pa Kaew.
Later, the monks of Wat Pa Kaew had been ordained at the Rattana Maha Thera School in Sri Lanka. This sect became highly revered among the people of Ayutthaya, leading to increased numbers of people ordaining at the Pa Kaew sect. King U Thong appointed Somdet Phra Wanarat, the abbot of the sect, as the right-hand patriarch, alongside Somdet Phra Buddhakosachan, the patriarch of the sect. The temple has ample parking space to accommodate the large number of tourists. #Get a discount without relying on luck
