Once the spiritual centerpiece of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, Wat Phra Si Sanphet stands as a timeless symbol of royal devotion and architectural grace. Built within the ancient royal palace grounds, it served as the kingdom’s holiest temple — a place reserved for kings, ceremonies, and the veneration of the Buddha. Its iconic three chedis rise majestically against the sky, each enshrining the ashes of Ayutthayan kings, their symmetry reflecting both power and serenity.
⛩️ The Cruciform Vihara – Harmony in Four Directions
On the western end of the temple stands the Cruciform Vihara, a striking structure distinguished by its four porticos. Scholars believe this sacred space once housed four Buddha images, each facing a different direction — standing to the south, sitting to the east, walking to the north, and reclining to the west. Together, these postures embodied the Buddha’s life, teachings, and eternal presence, creating a complete spiritual compass within the temple grounds.
