Long before Angkor Wat dominated the skyline, Bakong Temple stood as the spiritual and architectural heart of the Khmer Empire. Located in the Roluos Group, about 15 km east of Siem Reap, Bakong is often overlooked by tourists β but itβs actually the first temple mountain built entirely of sandstone, setting the foundation for all future Angkor monuments.
Built in the 9th century under King Indravarman I, Bakong is a symbolic representation of Mount Meru, the center of the universe in Hindu cosmology. It rises in a pyramid structure, with five tiers, central sanctuaries, and eight towers β each tier representing a spiritual level. At the summit sits a tall sanctuary tower, offering wide views of the countryside.
Despite its age, Bakong retains a powerful and serene atmosphere. The moat, stone naga bridges, and large guardian statues still stand strong. Unlike the crowded temples at Angkor, here you can enjoy moments of stillness, quiet exploration, and spiritual reflection.
π Why visit Bakong Temple?
It's the earliest sandstone temple mountain in Khmer architecture.
Less crowded = more peaceful and photogenic.
Ideal for understanding the evolution of Khmer temples, from Roluos to Angkor.
πΈ Travel Tips:
