Quangang Shanyao Salt Field: A Hidden Gem in Quanzhou Known as the "Mirror of the Sky"

The Quangang Shanyao Salt Field, located in Fujian Province, is a significant ecological sea salt production base with over 200 years of history. It still employs traditional sun-drying methods and is the second-largest state-owned salt field in the province.

On clear days, the square-shaped salt ponds reflect the sky and surrounding scenery like mirrors, earning it the nickname "Mirror of the Sky." If you're lucky, you might even witness the breathtaking sight of fiery clouds, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.

Diligent salt workers, wearing traditional bamboo hats, move back and forth across the salt ponds, blending seamlessly with the reflections of mountains, blue skies, and white clouds. This picturesque setting has made the salt field a popular destination for photography enthusiasts.

The Shanyao Salt Field has several working areas. I visited two: Zhongcuo and Donghai.
1️⃣ Donghai Area: This area is more organized, with large, well-arranged salt ponds and expansive views. You can capture both the salt fields and surrounding mountains in one frame. Drone shots of the panoramic view are particularly stunning.
2️⃣ Zhongcuo Area: This area is less crowded and feels more "wild." Here, you can photograph the salt fields alongside distant chimneys and residential buildings.

📷 Best Time to Visit:
Afternoon and sunset are ideal times to visit. In the afternoon, the ample sunlight highlights the crystalline texture of the salt fields. During sunset, the soft light creates a shimmering effect on the water, and silhouettes of salt workers against the sunset add a touch of humanity to your photos.

✅ Avoid visiting during or after rainy days, as the salt piles may be covered or stored away.
✅ Do not step on or damage the salt piles.
✅ It's not recommended to make a special trip from far away just to visit.
