Yan Temple is dedicated to Yan Hui, the "Fusheng" (Revered Sage). Yan Hui was a disciple of Confucius who was content with poverty and lived in a humble alley. He was Confucius' most accomplished disciple and was very knowledgeable, but unfortunately died at the age of 41. He was the first of the four disciples of Confucius, and was worshipped in the Confucian Temple along with Zeng Shen, Kong Ji, and Mencius.
Qufu Yan Temple is located across the street from the Kong Mansion. It was rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty and has been renovated in successive dynasties. The existing Fusheng Hall is a Ming Dynasty building with exquisite reliefs on the stone pillars. The stele in front of the hall, which was rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty, is inscribed with both Chinese characters and Phags-pa Mongolian script, which is rare. The Qi Guogong Hall in the western courtyard, which is dedicated to Yan Hui's father, is not open to the public.
