Seeing the Aurora in Reykjavik is one of Iceland’s most magical experiences. On clear, dark nights, the sky above the city can suddenly come alive with shimmering waves of green, purple, and pink light. These natural lights, also known as the Northern Lights, are caused by solar particles colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere. While Reykjavik is a city with lights, it’s still possible to witness this stunning show from spots like Grótta Lighthouse, Öskjuhlíð Hill, or the shorelines around Seltjarnarnes. The best viewing season is from September to April, when nights are longest. Watching the aurora dance above the sea and snow-covered mountains feels peaceful and otherworldly, as if nature is painting across the sky. For an even better view, many people take short night tours away from city lights into the countryside.
