The Colosseum (Colosseo) is the largest oval amphitheater from ancient Rome, built between 72 and 82 AD. Today, the remaining ruins are located in the heart of Rome, Italy.
It is also the largest circular theater in existence, with an estimated capacity of 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. It was used for gladiatorial contests, executions, historical reenactments of significant battles, and performances based on Roman mythology.
By the early Middle Ages, the Colosseum was no longer used for entertainment purposes. It later served as housing, workshops, clergy residences, fortifications, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
Although parts of the Colosseum have been damaged due to earthquakes and stone robbers, it remains a symbolic structure of the Roman Empire. In addition to being one of Rome's most famous tourist attractions, the Colosseum is listed among the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World and the New Seven Wonders of the World. In 1980, UNESCO designated the Colosseum as a World Heritage Site.
