A two-day, one-night trip to Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture

I went to Sado Island, an isolated island on the Sea of Japan side of Niigata Prefecture, and drove around it.

The circumference of the island is about 280 km, and it takes just under 7 hours by car nonstop.

Sado Island has the longest prefectural road in Japan, the Sado Loop Line, which runs along the coastline and is well maintained and easy to drive on.

Along the way, there are many tourist attractions such as Onogame, Futatsugame, and Sado Gold Mine.

Shukunegi, an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the southwest of the island, has a nostalgic fishing town that feels like an olden day.

In nearby Yajima and Kyojima, you can enjoy the tub boats that were made famous in Ghibli movies.

As it is surrounded by the sea on all sides, the seafood is delicious and you can enjoy eating as well.

As for how to get there,
it is about 400 km away from Tokyo via Niigata Port.
From Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island, it takes 2.5 hours by car ferry, and 1 hour and 10 minutes by jetfoil.

Ferries also depart from Naoetsu Port in Joetsu City to Ogi Port on Sado Island, and from Naoetsu Port, it takes 2 hours and 40 minutes to reach Sado Island by car ferry only.

The car ferry can also carry private cars, and there are game centers, restaurants, vending machines, etc., so you can spend your time comfortably.

The jetfoil arrived very quickly and was very convenient.
