Sapporo Travel Precautions (Including Hokkaido Regional Features)
1. Weather/Climate Preparation is Essential
Winter: Sapporo has a lot of snow and very low temperatures in winter. It is common for temperatures to drop below -10 degrees Celsius.
Non-slip shoes and winter gear are essential!
Hot packs, scarves, and gloves are essential.
Summer: It is cooler than the mainland, but the daily temperature difference is large.
You may need outerwear in the morning/evening.
2. Transportation Precautions
Public Transportation: The subway/bus system is well-developed, but transfers may be more inconvenient than on the mainland.
If you are using a JR Pass, check if it is a Hokkaido-only pass.
Driving during snowy weather: Be very careful when driving in winter when renting a car. Black ice, heavy snow, and poor visibility are common.
3. Understanding Hokkaido's Specialty Food
Sapporo is centered around Hokkaido-style food such as crab dishes, soup curry, Genghis Khan, and miso ramen.
Some local specialties have strong odors or are mainly raw (raw), so consider allergies and your taste.
4. Cash Usage Rate
Compared to Tokyo/Osaka, there are many places that do not accept credit cards. Especially local restaurants, street vendors, and rural hot springs.
A certain amount of cash is required (in yen).
5. Language Barrier
Despite being a large city, the number of people who can speak English is limited.
We recommend learning a translation app or simple Japanese conversation in advance.
6. Festival Period and Crowding
During **Sapporo Snow Festival (February)** and summer festival season, hotel and rental car prices skyrocket and reservations are difficult.
We recommend making reservations at least a month in advance.
