The heart of Seongeup folk village lies in its vibrant, living culture. Unlike a sterile, manufactured museum, the village is still inhabited, offering visitors the unique opportunity to interact with local residents who maintain their traditional way of life. This direct interaction is incredibly rewarding. The villagers often share fascinating insights into Jeju's unique customs, such as the famous absence of formal gates, replaced only by simple wooden bars known as jeongnang . These bars historically signaled whether the resident was home or expected back soon. Taking a free guided tour is highly recommended, as the knowledgeable local guides are excellent storytellers, explaining the history and cultural significance of the structures, including the Confucian school and the ancient government office. This personal connection makes the visit a truly immersive cultural lesson.
