Step back in time at Nagase-ke (the Nagase Family Residence), one of Shirakawa-go’s most iconic five-story gassho-zukuri farmhouses. Located just an 8-minute walk from Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal, this remarkable home showcases the region’s traditional architecture, with its massive 11-meter main pillar running through the steep thatched roof — a true symbol of craftsmanship and strength.
The Nagase family, a distinguished household with a 250-year history, once served as village doctors. Inside, you’ll find a fascinating collection of Edo-period medical tools, preserved with great care. The third and fourth floors display household artifacts and farming tools that evoke a deep sense of nostalgia and connection to the land — a heartfelt reflection of the family’s philosophy that “the love of things is the greatest treasure.”
A visit to Nagase-ke is not just about admiring architecture — it’s an intimate look into Japan’s rural heritage, resilience, and enduring spirit.
