Xian'e Lake, originally named Xian'e Creek, lies 5 kilometers northwest of Shangzhou City, upstream of the Danjiang River. The lake was formed in 1973 with the completion of the Erlongshan Reservoir. The lake is shaped like a Chinese character "Y," covering over 6,000 mu (approximately 1,000 acres) and holding 81 million cubic meters of water. Surrounded by steep cliffs, the lake offers breathtaking scenery, including the Xian'e Cliff and the peach blossoms along the creek's banks. An island, approximately 20 mu (approximately 1,000 acres), is nestled within the lake, surrounded by mountains that rise and fall like dragons, their heads raised towards the island, resembling four dragons playing with a pearl, a truly remarkable sight.
Xian'e Lake boasts scenic attractions such as the Xian'e Cliffs, the island in the center of the lake, and the Guandi Temple. As early as the Tang Dynasty, numerous literati and poets, including Li Bai, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi, journeyed thousands of miles to this area to recite poetry, sail, and enjoy the sights. Since then, the area has become a popular tourist destination in the ancient capital of Chang'an. The reservoir's banks are lined with sheer cliffs, craggy peaks, jagged rocks, lush forests, gurgling streams, and the fragrance of birdsong and flowers, creating a tranquil and pure natural beauty. At the confluence of the Banqiao River and the Danjiang River, a solitary peak stands alone, creating the wondrous spectacle of two dragons playing with a pearl. A cluster of ancient temples once stood on the shore. Every year, during the last three days of the first lunar month, a temple fair featuring three operas (Qinqiang, Erhuang, and Meihu Opera) was held to enhance the atmosphere, attracting pilgrims from Sichuan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Hubei provinces. Stone sheep, stone cows, stone frogs, and golden roosters announcing the dawn stand on the river bank; Queen Mother of the West's dressing table and rouge box are left on the shore; the "Xian'e Cut Cliff" on the Xian'e Peak and the "Peach Blossoms on the Stream Bank" on the south bank of Danjiang River are included in the "Eight Scenic Spots and Ten Views of Shangzhou".
