During his lifetime, Tokugawa Ieyasu instructed his retainers that after his death,
his body would be buried at Mount Kunozan, his funeral would be held at Zojoji Temple in Edo,
his memorial tablet would be interred at Daijuji Temple in Mikawa Province,
and after one lap had been completed, a small chapel would be built on Mount Nikko. Toshogu Shrine is magnificent wherever you go.
At Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, major renovations are carried out every 50 years, and the gorgeous, vibrant colors have been preserved for hundreds of years.
The main shrine, representing the realm of the gods, is connected to the worship hall, representing the human world, through a stone gap, and even the beams are beautifully decorated.
The "sacred mausoleum" where Ieyasu is buried faces due west, and is said to "watch over the warlords of the west" and "overlook his hometown, Okazaki City."
Until the ropeway opened, stone steps were the only way to access Toshogu Shrine. There are 1,159 steps from the stone torii gate.
I took the ropeway on the way back, but I headed for the stairs to see the spectacular view.
The view of Suruga Bay from Ichinomon Gate is spectacular!
Mount Kuno, 270 meters above sea level.
A stunning view of Suruga Bay and blue skies.
The sea breeze and the scent of the trees were refreshing.
