🏰 Peleș – The Castle of Time
A 9-part travel series: A castle that never stops breathing.
That morning, I walked slowly across the courtyard of Peleș Castle. A cool breeze blew gently, and the leaves of the vines that swayed along the walls swayed quietly. I stood there, speechless, and slowly looked up.
A building caught my eye in its tranquility—a German-style stepped gable, like a wooden house in a small Bavarian town. The fretwork on the window frames, the reddish-brown roof, gently faded with time, now a small coffee shop.
The plaster walls were slightly cracked…but never broken. It didn't look like a "palace building," but more than that—it was like a house, inhabited by people, still harboring the sounds of life.
Peleș Castle was built in the late 19th century by King Carol I of Romania—a German-born king who grew up in Prussian art, discipline, and engineering.
He built not just a residence, but a "mini-city" for his court. With a rhythm of life unique to him, the buildings surrounding the castle are lined with a Bavarian-German Alpine style, a Germanic language that is deeply embedded in the heart of modern Romania.
Behind the building is another wall, a cream-pink hue with a triangular pediment that matches the Roman numeral clock above the balcony.
The clock's hands stand still, as if time has frozen in a moment when no one knows what's happening. Some may walk by, but we stand there, and gradually feel... this is "a moment frozen."
This clock tower was once the center of palace life. In an era before smartphones and wristwatches, it was the "same rhythm" of the courtiers. But on the day it stopped, we feel... something is still ticking.
Sometimes "beauty" begins when we allow ourselves to pause.
