I just found the perfect blend of ocean air and mountain peaks on a solo trip to Sokcho. This charming fishing city on Korea’s rugged East Coast is the ultimate destination for travelers seeking natural beauty, fresh seafood, and peaceful solitude.
What is this place all about? Sokcho is a gateway to adventure. It’s nestled between the sparkling Sea of Japan (East Sea) and the dramatic peaks of Seoraksan National Park. It’s famous for its lively fish market, quiet beaches, and easy access to some of Korea’s most breathtaking hiking trails.
Why Here? For the perfect mix of relaxation and active adventure. It’s a safe, easy-to-navigate city that feels a world away from the bustle of Seoul. As a solo traveler, you can set your own pace—whether that’s conquering a mountain or sipping coffee by the port.
My Solo Itinerary:
· Day 1: Arrived and headed straight to Sokcho Beach for a walk along the coast. Explored the vibrant Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market for a solo dinner of ultra-fresh hoe (sashimi). Watched the sunset over the iconic Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion.
· Day 2: Took a local bus to Seoraksan National Park. Hiked the Ulsanbawi Rock trail for jaw-dropping coastal views (challenging but worth it!). Alternatively, took the cable car to Gwongeumseong Fortress for stunning vistas with less effort. Returned to the city for a well-earned Korean barbecue feast.
Top Tips for Solo Travelers:
· Stay Near the Beach or Bus Terminal: This puts you within walking distance of food, transport, and the sea.
· Use Local Buses: Buses to Seoraksan are frequent, cheap, and easy to use.
· Try Dakgangjeong: Sokcho is famous for this crispy, sweet-and-spicy fried chicken—a perfect solo meal.
· Learn a Few Korean Phrases: A simple "anj-ayo" (sit down) at a barbecue place or "masiss-eoyo" (it's delicious) will be warmly received.
Sokcho was the perfect solo reset. The powerful combination of mountain heights and ocean depths was exactly what I needed to recharge on my own.
