Songyang Yuanshe Lanshu's architectural design is ingenious, skillfully blending nature and tradition to create an idyllic mountain retreat.
In terms of location and layout, Yuanshe Lanshu fully respects the natural terrain. It is situated in Langshu Village, Siduxiang, Songyang County, with the site sloping from north to south, a height difference of nearly 40 to 50 meters, typical of a mountainous settlement. The design team followed the natural contours, continuing the traditional natural village pattern, modularizing three functional spaces: public areas, centralized guest rooms, and standalone villas. Each functional module avoids ancient trees and is placed on the original terrace elevation as much as possible according to the natural terrain. The public areas are terraced step by step, and the guest rooms are broken into smaller units, which not only reduces the building mass but also allows for subtle adjustments in height and angle based on contour lines, landscape, and views. This ensures privacy while maximizing scenic experiences, making the buildings appear to grow naturally from the mountain, gently fitting into the terrain and blending into the landscape.
From the perspective of exterior appearance and materials, Yuanshe Lanshu is rich in regional characteristics. The designers drew inspiration from the pitched roof form and extensively used local rubble stone and rammed earth materials, continuing traditional lifestyles and cultural heritage. Each mountain house’s rammed earth, stacked stones, and small green tiles serve as both building materials and facade elements. The rubble stone steps ascend gradually, and the clever circulation design guides visitors’ sightlines to meander between distant and nearby mountains, creating a sense of changing scenery and secluded paths for mountain exploration. The buildings face the valley with mountains at their backs, resting on treasured land, hidden and revealed by trees. Through different windows, at various times and building heights, visitors can enjoy diverse views, with every window framing a boundless mountain landscape painting.
Yuanshe Lanshu also places great emphasis on blending with the surrounding environment. The village has more than 20 ancient trees aged two to three hundred years, including species such as cedar, maple, and precious yew. These rare ancient trees were incorporated into the architectural layout, with houses arranged around them as if embracing the trees, which is the origin of the name "Yuanshe Lanshu." Additionally, during construction, ancient paths, temples, streams, and two ancestral halls in the village were preserved, allowing the entire architecture to harmoniously coexist with the natural and cultural environment, presenting a unique mountain living aesthetic.
