#100 Ways to Travel
The "Jingzijiao Wapan Salt Field" will host the 2024 Taiwan Salt Life Festival from 9/7 to 10/13. There were actually several tour buses visiting such a remote place, and I was very surprised to find that one of the buses was filled with foreign tourists speaking Korean.
Listening to the tour guide's explanation, I learned that this was the place where the richest salt merchants in the south made their fortune in the early days. There are still old houses from more than 100 years ago. It is said that the special tile construction method on the roof is to resist typhoons and sea breezes and prevent the roof from collapsing and leaking. This shows the wisdom of the ancients.
It is said that the poor salt-making technology in the early days caused the salt to be bitter. Later, in order to improve the salt-making technology, salt fields were built on the seaside. In order to obtain high-quality crystalline salt, the ancients had to lay tiles in the salt field and then lead water to the salt pond. The salt was made through the "three exposures and nine dryings" method and dried naturally in the sun.
The soil here contains too much salt, so trees cannot grow there; they must dig deep and add fresh water for irrigation in order to survive. During the Art Carnival, there are also some salt sculptures on display, such as "Eternal Love", "Salt Crystal Cathedral", "Good Harvest" and so on. On the way back, we also saw the beautiful sunset in the west, and at the same time, the moon rose in the east, and a group of egrets resting in the fields. It was a unique sight that was definitely worth a visit!
