The ancient capital of Tainan has a very distinctive religious site - "Tainan Temple of Heaven", commonly known as Tiangong Temple, which is famous for worshipping the highest Taoist god, the Jade Emperor (Tiangong). It is not only a place of pious belief, but also the only temple in Taiwan that has set the tone of "replacing statues with holy tablets" for worship, symbolizing the intersection of folk and government, tradition and modern faith .
🏛️ Historical Origin and Architectural Features
• The origin of offering sacrifices to heaven can be traced back to the period of Zheng Chenggong in 1661. At that time, an altar was built here to offer sacrifices to heaven and earth, which was called "Tiangongcheng" .
• The official construction of the temple began in 1854 during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty. The Sanchuan Gate and the main hall were built with funds raised by officials and civilians, and it was renamed "Temple of Heaven" in 1894. It has been renovated many times since then .
• The main hall hangs a plaque with the word "一" and a stone inscription with the word "大哉", which together form the word "天", expressing people's respect and prayers for heaven and earth.
• The entire temple is a three-story and two-corridor structure. There is also a Wusheng Hall on the left, which is the only ancient monument in the city that was built by officials and civilians and has no statues.
🌿 Faith atmosphere and festival rituals
• The belief uses the idea of "acting on behalf of heaven" to let people hand over their misfortunes to the God of Heaven in the hope of changing their fortunes ().
• The first and fifteenth day of each lunar month are full of incense; on the ninth day of the first lunar month, the birthday of the Jade Emperor, a grand ceremony will be held, and peace noodles and lucky red envelopes will be distributed.
• The temple usually worships more than 30 accompanying gods, just like a department store in faith, to meet the prayers of all aspects of life.
