The restoration process of the "Xinyi Street Laogu Stone Huang Residence" preserved the original walls, showcasing the weathered marks left by time. At the same time, it incorporates modern elements such as a wooden roof structure and a red spiral staircase design. With skylights and windows for natural lighting, and modern spotlights illuminating the space in the evening, the interplay between old and new creates a unique "aesthetic of imperfection," also known as Wabi-Sabi. This philosophy emphasizes simplicity and returning to the essence of things, avoiding excessive decoration.
From the second-floor platform, it is evident that the original building was dilapidated, lacking roof tiles to shield against wind and rain. During the restoration, the design team cleverly covered the original structure with modern roof tiles, leaving gaps between the old and new elements visible in photos. Additionally, the highest ridge of the roof and the gaps between the two layers are fitted with glass, allowing sunlight to penetrate to the first floor for natural lighting.
