The Tainan City Museum of Art, commonly known as "Nanmei No. 1," formerly the Tainan Prefecture Police Station, built during the Japanese colonial era, is one of Tainan's most iconic cultural landmarks. It serves not only as a venue for exhibiting art but also as a place that holds historical memories. Designed by Japanese architect Umezawa Shajiro and completed in 1930, the station was partially destroyed by Allied air raids during World War II, but its main structure was fortunately preserved. After the war, it served as the Tainan City Government Office. It wasn't until the relocation of the city government in 1997 that this historic building was designated as an art museum. Entering the Nanmei No. 1, you can sense a calm and elegant historical atmosphere. From the exterior's Greek columns and arched porticoes to the magnificent interior's high-ceilinged lobby and spiral staircase, every detail speaks of its past glory. The "South America Pavilion" was subsequently renovated, cleverly combining old and new elements. While retaining the original architectural style, they incorporated modern exhibition spaces and facilities, allowing the old building to continue its vitality and meet the public with a brand new look.
