The Tainan Museum of Art, located in the West Central District of Tainan City, Taiwan, is a branch of the Tainan Museum of Art, dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of art and history. Formerly the Tainan Police Station during the Japanese colonial period, the museum was built in 1900 and converted into a police headquarters in 1930. After the war, it served as the Tainan City Government Office in 1945. It was designated a municipal historic site in 2011 and underwent restoration and renovation in 2018. It officially opened on January 27, 2019. The architectural design retains Japanese-style elements with red bricks, and the total area is approximately 5,000 square meters. Since its opening in 2019, the museum has become a core venue for Tainan's artistic development. It houses a collection of approximately 2,000 artworks, encompassing both Taiwanese and international works. Several themed exhibitions will be held in the summer of 2025, attracting art lovers and tourists alike. The first building of the museum is divided into several exhibition halls, including permanent and special exhibition halls. The permanent exhibition showcases the history of Taiwanese art and local cultural works. There is also an outdoor garden and a multi-purpose hall. The special exhibition, "Jumping in the Wrong Place. Serial Dreams: A Research Exhibition of Chen Chun-lu's Photographic Collection," is currently on display from April 3 to August 17, 2025. It features works from five of Chen Chun-lu's series ("Wind," "Breathing Dark Colors," "Opening the Sky," "Collecting Childhood," and "Temple of the Temple"). Through the lens of art history and scientific testing techniques, it reveals Chen Chun-lu's photographic aesthetics and the social changes in Taiwan. It is suitable for visitors interested in photography. Another special exhibition, "Out of the Grid! Machines x Materials x Art: A Super Expansion," will run from October 26, 2024 to March 2, 2025. It showcases the Chi Mei Museum's collection of industrial machinery, combining works by nine artists from six countries. The theme focuses on the artistic application of machine tools and materials, making it suitable for visitors interested in the fusion of machinery and art. Winter weather is cool, so a light jacket is recommended. The museum offers a comfortable shopping environment with a lounge area and a café. Some exhibitions may require reservations, so please confirm in advance.
