The Tainan Governor's Residence, located in the East District of Tainan City, Taiwan, is a significant historical structure from the Japanese colonial period and is now a designated city monument and cultural attraction. Designed and built by the Japanese government in 1900 (Meiji 33), it served as the Governor's residence. After 1901, it became the official residence of the Tainan Chief Minister, and in 1920, it became the official residence of the Tainan Prefecture Governor. It also served as a place of rest for the Japanese Imperial Family during their visits, and in 1923, Crown Prince Hirohito (later Emperor Showa) stayed there. Designated a Tainan City Historic Site in 1998, restoration work began in 2000, and in 2010, it opened as the "Governor's Residence Living Museum," integrating exhibitions, dining, and a boutique store, showcasing the architecture and culture of the Japanese colonial period. The Governor's Residence consists of two parts: the Western-style building and the Japanese-style building. Currently, only the Western-style building is open to the public. Spanning approximately 227 pings (approximately 800 square meters), it features British colonial architecture, characterized by red brick arcades and octagonal protrusions. Inside, artifacts from the Japanese colonial period and items used by the imperial family are on display. The Japanese-style building is currently closed due to ongoing restoration work. The grounds include the clock tower exterior and gardens, perfect for history enthusiasts and photographers. A light jacket is recommended for cool winter weather. The residence offers a lounge area and a cafe. Some activities may require reservations, so please confirm in advance.
