The Tainan Museum of Art II, located in the West Central District of Tainan City, Taiwan, is a branch of the Tainan Museum of Art, dedicated to the exhibition and promotion of modern and contemporary art. The museum officially opened on January 27, 2019. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning artist Shigeru Ban, the museum features a wavy, streamlined exterior inspired by the petals of a phoenix, encompassing approximately 8,000 square meters. Formerly the site of the Tainan Cultural Center, planning and renovation began in 2014, with construction commencing in 2016. The museum aims to complement the original museum and become a key hub for Tainan's artistic development. The museum houses a collection of approximately 3,000 artworks, encompassing both Taiwanese and international works. Several themed exhibitions will be on display in the summer of 2025, attracting art enthusiasts and tourists alike.
The museum is divided into several halls, including permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, and an educational and outreach area. The permanent exhibition showcases contemporary art and works by local artists, and there is also an outdoor sculpture garden and a multi-purpose hall. The special exhibition "Errors within Errors. Serial Dreams: A Research Exhibition of Chen Chunlu's Photographic Collection" is currently on display, running from April 3 to August 17, 2025. Focusing on Chen Chunlu's photographs, this exhibition encompasses five series ("Wind," "Breathing Darkness," "Opening the Sky," "Collecting Childhood," and "Temple of the Temple"). Through the lens of art history and scientific testing techniques, it reveals the artist's creative secrets and market competition during the Dutch Golden Age of the 16th and 17th centuries. Combining a whirlwind narrative with interactive elements, it is suitable for visitors interested in photography and art history. Another special exhibition, "Out of the Box! Machines x Materials x Art: A Super Expansion," will run from October 26, 2024 to March 2, 2025. It showcases the Chi Mei Museum's collection of industrial machinery, combined with the works of nine artists from six countries. The exhibition focuses on the artistic applications of machine tools and materials, making it suitable for visitors interested in the fusion of machinery and art. ===========================
