Ximending is Taipei's most iconic shopping district.
While it's often known for its night markets, a daytime stroll is also a truly captivating experience.
This time, I explored the area in the following order: food → street art → temple tour.

🍚 Local Brunch at Guobin Xian Zhou

A short walk from Ximen Station, I visited the long-established snack restaurant "Guobin Xian Zhou."
This popular spot is frequented by locals from morning, noon, and late into the night.
Their signature dish is, of course, salty congee.
Ordering braised porridge or boiled chicken along with it makes for a truly Taiwanese set.

A row of chicken meats is lined up on the table, allowing you to choose your favorite cuts.
The moist chicken is best enjoyed with the special garlic soy sauce or ginger sauce!

🎨 Street Art in Ximending American Street

After filling your stomach, take a stroll through the back alleys of Ximending.
In "American Street (Lane 96 Kunming Street)," bold art is painted on the walls and shutters of buildings.
From giant murals to pop graffiti, each alley has a different atmosphere, making it fun just to walk around!

Tourists are taking photos, so it's lively even during the day.
We recommend strolling around while searching for photogenic spots.

🏮 Ximending Empress Zhenzu Temple and Mazu Worship

After passing through the art area, you'll arrive at the tranquil Mazu Temple.
This is the Ximending Empress Zhenzu Temple.
It enshrines Mazu (the Holy Mother of God), and serves as a religious center for local people.
There's also a library on the temple grounds, open to the local community as a place of religion and learning.

In fact, Mazu worship spread in the following ways:
• Its headquarters is on Meizhou Island in Fujian
• Taiwan (Tainan and Taipei) is its regional center
• Yokohama Chinatown (established in 2006) is its overseas base

Thinking about the connection between Fujian, Taiwan, and Japan through Mazu makes for a romantic sense of history, even while strolling around.
