Located in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan's twelve remaining original castles and the highest mountain castle in the country. Walking along the stone-paved mountain path, you are surrounded by lush greenery, with ancient stone walls standing silently as if narrating the history of the Sengoku and Edo periods.
Upon reaching the summit, you are greeted by the modest yet dignified two-story keep. Its white walls and black tiles stand out vividly against the verdant mountain forest. This castle does not aim for grandeur but instead uses the natural mountain terrain as a shield, showcasing the unique sturdiness and tranquility of a mountain castle.
Transportation Information
Train: Take the JR Hakubi Line from Okayama Station for about 1 hour to "Bitchu-Takahashi Station."
Shuttle: From Takahashi Station, buses or taxis are available to the "Shiromibashi Park" parking lot.
Hiking: From the parking lot, it takes about 40 minutes to hike up the mountain. During certain periods, a shuttle bus to "Fuigo Pass" is available (check the official website calendar), from which it is about a 20-minute walk to the keep.
On days when the shuttle bus is not running, you can drive, but parking is limited to about ten spaces. After parking, you will still need to walk to the keep.
The mountain path is gravelly and does not require special equipment, but a pair of suitable hiking shoes is recommended.
