Perched high on Mount Gagyu in Okayama Prefecture, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle (備中松山城) is one of Japan’s twelve remaining original castles — structures that have survived since the Edo period with their main keep (tenshu) intact.
Often called “the castle in the clouds”, it’s Japan’s highest mountain castle, standing at an elevation of about 430 meters. When the morning mist rolls in, the castle appears to float above the clouds, creating a breathtaking and almost mystical view that’s especially popular in autumn and winter.
The climb to the castle is steep but rewarding — a scenic trail through lush forest leads up to the beautifully preserved keep. Once you reach the top, you’re greeted with panoramic views of Takahashi City and the surrounding mountains.
The castle itself is small but full of charm, offering a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past and remarkable wooden craftsmanship that has stood the test of time.
