The 84th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, said to have been founded by the Chinese monk Ganjin in the 8th century. The vermilion-painted main hall and the principal image, a seated eleven-faced Thousand-armed Kannon statue, are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. The treasure museum exhibits scrolls and folding screen paintings of the Genpei War.
