Kamikochi’s Mystical Charm: Autumn Hike to Myojin Pond

Visited Kamikochi in autumn and it honestly felt like stepping into a fairytale. The valley was wrapped in mist and drizzle, turning everything gold and mysterious. I started at the iconic Kappa Bridge — where legend says a mischievous river spirit once appeared — and watched the fog roll over the Azusa River and surrounding peaks. From there, I followed the riverside trails toward Myojin Pond, a serene spot tucked deep in the forest near Hotaka Shrine. The hike took about 1 hour each way, an easy and peaceful walk with wooden bridges, rustling leaves, and bursts of autumn color at every turn.
Getting there: Take the train from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima, then a direct bus to Kamikochi (around 1.5 hours). Cars aren’t allowed, keeping the air crisp and the atmosphere beautifully untouched.
Tip: Stayed at Mozumo in Hirayu Onsen and Kakurean Hidaji Ryokan — the perfect retreats after a long day of hiking. Private open-air onsen, incredible kaiseki dinner, and total peace surrounded by nature. The best way to end a misty mountain day.
