Not far from Meguro Station, the #TokyoMetropolitanTeienArtMuseum is an antique mansion. The building is divided into two buildings, the old and new, and a large lawn and Japanese garden. The old building is the former residence of Prince Asaka, and has the style of early overseas Chinese buildings. The building itself is very attractive in classical aesthetics.
The museum often holds art touring exhibitions, and in June it was renewed with a solo exhibition by painter #竹久梦二 (#yumeji) titled “Taisho Romance and the New World.”
The Taisho era seems far away for young people, but it is the era of Japan’s grandparents, so it attracts many old ladies dressed up in fancy dresses. Sisters come to visit the exhibition together to reminisce the Taisho romance of their era.
I was just passing through the place and wasn't familiar with Takehisa Yumeji. Instead, I thought the building itself was more interesting. It was full of details of Western classical elements, especially the wall reliefs and glass window grilles. Walking through the arched corridors and stairwells, you could take photos with a very tasteful retro style at just a turn.
The Japanese garden itself is not that interesting, but there are many towering trees in the garden where you can enjoy the shade.
The tour took about half an hour to complete. It was a pity that you had to see the special exhibition to enter the museum, and the special exhibition works covered the beautiful interior of the building. You couldn't take photos in most places, which was a pity.
