🎨A Day Exploring Art and Ramen at Roppongi Hills
The MAM Project "Buddy Dyerell Exhibition," Hiro Sugiyama Exhibition, and finishing with Afuri’s Vegan Ramen
At the Mori Art Museum inside Roppongi Hills, the MAM Project featured the Buddy Dyerell exhibition. His works, which intersect video, sculpture, and political irony, carry an unsettling humor while posing questions to the viewer. Particularly striking was the lineup of matchbox-sized drawings themed around surveillance society and the physicality of the individual.
In the same building, the gallery area hosted Hiro Sugiyama’s Cultural Heritage series. Inspired by Buddhist statues from the Nara and Heian periods, the works are reconstructed using gold leaf and monochrome techniques. There’s a mysterious charm as past memories and contemporary chaos seem to clash on the canvas, and the bouquet created through his luxurious social connections is sure to be a hit on social media.
After being inspired by art, I had a slightly late lunch at "AFURI" in the Hills basement. While the classic yuzu shio ramen was tempting, I chose the vegan ramen this time. It was a more delicate bowl than I imagined. Despite no animal products, the broth made from kelp and dried shiitake mushrooms combined with the aroma of yuzu had an elegance reminiscent of a kaiseki meal’s finale. The colorful vegetable toppings were beautiful, giving a sense of satisfaction like an extension of the art viewing experience.
▶Summary
• Buddy Dyerell Exhibition: Sharp perspective on the intersection of city and body, excellent spatial composition.
• Hiro Sugiyama Exhibition: A vivid clash of tradition and pop. Recommended for those sensitive to culture.
• Afuri’s Vegan Ramen: No compromise despite no animal products. An artistic flavor.
It was a day gentle on the senses with both art and gourmet delights. Next time, I might want to include the night observatory and enjoy “Hills” even more.
