Sumida Park stretches along both banks of the Sumida River and is one of Tokyo's most iconic cherry blossom viewing spots, historically listed among Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. The park features a cherry blossom tunnel spanning several kilometers, primarily composed of Somei Yoshino cherry trees, with approximately 600 trees in total. These blossoms create a stunning contrast with the backdrop of the Tokyo Skytree and traditional bridges like Azuma Bridge and Sakura Bridge. The scenery is captivating both day and night. During the blooming season (typically late March to early April), the river reflects the pink blossoms, and the illuminated trees at night create a dreamlike atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy the blossoms from a yakatabune (traditional houseboat) or have a picnic along the riverbank, experiencing the elegant hanami tradition dating back to the Edo period.
Access: A 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tokyo Metro/Toei Subway, or directly from Oshiage Station near the Tokyo Skytree. The park is open 24 hours and free to visit, with nighttime illumination until around 9:00 PM during the cherry blossom season. Visiting early in the morning or on weekdays is recommended to avoid crowds and enjoy the poetic charm of the cherry blossoms and river breeze in solitude.
