The Sumida River, Tokyo's historic and romantic mother river, transforms into a soft pink wonderland every spring as cherry blossoms bloom along its banks. This iconic hanami (flower viewing) spot has been cherished since the Edo period, inspiring poets and painters to capture its springtime beauty. Today, the several-kilometer-long cherry blossom tunnel (featuring around 600 trees, predominantly Somei Yoshino cherry trees) blends seamlessly with modern landmarks like the Tokyo Skytree and classical bridges such as Azumabashi and Kototoibashi, creating a unique skyline that feels like a springtime poem transcending time.
During the cherry blossom season (typically late March to early April), the riverside paths are filled with picnickers, and the nighttime illumination transforms the area into a magical scene. The reflections of cherry blossoms and lights on the water create a dreamlike atmosphere. For a unique perspective, consider taking a traditional "yakatabune" boat to admire the cherry blossoms and Tokyo Skytree from the river, or stroll between Asakusa and Oshiage to experience the blend of Edo-era charm and modern culture.
Access: A 3-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line or Toei Asakusa Line, or direct access from Oshiage Station on the Hanzomon Line near Tokyo Skytree. Free admission, open 24 hours, with nighttime illumination until around 9:00 PM during the cherry blossom season. Visiting early on a weekday morning is recommended to avoid crowds and enjoy a serene moment with the cherry blossoms and river breeze.
