Uji is not only famous for its tea and The Tale of Genji, but also for the World Heritage site, Byodo-in Temple. During the Heian period, Byodo-in was considered a Pure Land on earth, and the Phoenix Hall is depicted on the 10 yen coin.
Stroll along the Aji Pond, which resembles the Pond of Ultimate Bliss, and admire the reflection of the Phoenix Hall from different angles, feeling the Heian people's pursuit of ultimate bliss from a thousand years ago.
The Hoshokan Museum, which I visited a few years ago, houses statues of Taishakuten, Buddha, and excavated artifacts. My favorite part is the outdoor platform, where you can sit on the wooden deck and gaze at the changing scenery of the garden, perhaps experiencing true bliss.
Uji offers many tea snacks and tea soba. This time, I found a local café that serves local vegetable and pork steamed dishes for lunch. The simple preparation method allows you to taste the original flavors of the food.
