The Byodoin Temple in Uji exudes a serene and harmonious beauty. Unlike other tourist spots, it is not overcrowded, and its reflection quietly mirrors on the water's surface.
Byodoin is named after the Phoenix Hall, which features two phoenix statues symbolizing good fortune on its roof. The entire architectural design resembles a phoenix spreading its wings, earning high praise for its elegance. This iconic structure is even depicted on Japanese currency—the 10-yen coin and the 10,000-yen bill.
However, the pathways here are mostly gravel, making it a bit challenging to navigate with a stroller. That said, it is still manageable, and children often marvel at the stunning scenery.
After visiting Byodoin, you can head to a nearby station to enjoy Uji's famous matcha desserts at Nakamura Tokichi. Treat yourself to some matcha ice cream for a truly satisfying experience.
