St. Peter's Basilica Vatican

St. Peter's Basilica was built on the spot where St. Peter's tomb was found in the Vatican Circus.

St. Peter was crucified upside down (because St. Peter asked the Roman soldiers that he should not die in the same posture as his teacher, Jesus) in 64 AD. His disciples secretly made a sign to indicate his location. Under the dome is an altar above the tomb of St. Peter Baldacchino, a work by Bernini. It is a four-columned 29-meter-high canopy made of bronze and decorated with bronze spirals.
