The poet Lord Byron wrote The Prisoner of Chillon, inspired by the real-life prisoner François Bonivard, who was held captive in the castle’s dungeon for six years in the 16th century. Byron’s poem immortalized Bonivard’s story, bringing international attention to Chillon Castle. He even carved his name into one of the pillars in the dungeon, a mark that can still be seen today.
Both the golden light, the steamy lake and in some days the thick mist add the blurry ambience and dreamlike effect to the beauty of the castle. Whilst Turner was a master of using delicate washes of colours, defused lights and showcasing air and water merge seaminglessly. I don't know if the scene of the castle inspired him. Turner’s depiction of Chillon Castle in one of his famous paintings is now housed in Tate Britain in London, highlighting his signature use of light and atmosphere.
