That Luang, Vientiane

Pha That Luang Vientiane (Pha That Luang) or Phra Chedi Loka Chulamani is the most important religious site in Laos. It is a very important place of worship and a sacred object of Vientiane. It is located about 5 kilometers from the city center. It stands out with its Lao-style architecture. It is a golden stupa surrounded by a high golden wall. 📣 According to Lao history, Pha That Luang was built at the same time as the city of Vientiane by King Chanthaburi Prasitsak, the first ruler of Vientiane, along with 5 arhats to enshrine the relics of the Lord Buddha. In addition, according to legend, Pha That Luang has a history of construction for thousands of years, similar to Phra That Phanom in Thailand.

🛕 The pagoda is 45 meters high and resembles a lotus bud, which symbolizes the teachings of the Lord Buddha. The lowest level is the base of the chedi, a square on the east and west sides, 69 meters long on each side. Below, there are 323 sema stones around the 4 sides. There are worship halls on all 4 sides. There are stairs to every worship hall. Outside the area to the north and south, there are temples for monks and novices, or called Wat That Luang Nuea and Wat That Luang Tai.

👨👩👧👦 As for the locals, they believe that That Luang was built since the 3rd century. However, the current structure of That Luang was built by King Setthathirath in 1566. It was later renovated by the French. It is open to visitors every day. Both men and women must dress appropriately before visiting. -------------------------------
