To learn history, why not visit historical sites in person? Liugong Island, located in Weihai, Shandong, served as a defensive city during the Ming Dynasty and a naval base during the Qing Dynasty. It was also the site of China's first modern fleet.
You can take a ferry from the Weihai Liugong Island Pier, with three to four ferries departing every hour. The fare is 122 RMB, and you'll be accompanied by many seagulls along the way.
Upon disembarking, you'll find the Sino-Japanese War Museum on your right, a 15-minute walk away. This museum not only displays artifacts from the past but also provides a comprehensive explanation of Chinese and Japanese naval technology, coastal defense construction, and the entire course of the Sino-Japanese War. Overall, it accurately reflects the history without much bias.
Liugong Island is divided into several different sections, making it well worth spending a day to understand this segment of modern Chinese history from 130 years ago.
💰 Average cost: 122 RMB for the ferry ticket, 30 RMB for a simple lunch on the island.
🗓️ Itinerary: After disembarking, you can follow the suggested map, starting from the right side and slowly making your way to the historical sites on the left side of the island.
Since Liugong Island is also a military area, the last ferry departs at 5 PM. It is recommended to start your trip at 10 AM, allowing about six hours to explore all the historical buildings.
