No need to travel all the way to Greece—right at Zhejiang's doorstep lies a 'Sea Garden': Wenzhou's Dongtou! This isn't just another monotonous blue-sea-golden-sand destination, but a treasure island composed of colorful fairy-tale fishing villages, hardcore military relics, eyebrow-raisingly fresh seafood feasts, and winding picturesque coastal roads! Just switch to island mode this weekend!
1. Best Travel Time
Prime Season: May - October
Pleasant Climate: Moderate temperatures (summer averages 26-28°C, cooler than inland), ample sunshine, and refreshing sea breezes—perfect for outdoor activities and water fun.
Great Sea Conditions: Relatively clear waters (though not tropical-level, among Zhejiang's best coastal spots) with stunning views.
Abundant Activities: Open beaches, water sports, and a rich variety of fresh seafood.
2. Important Notes:
Typhoon Season: Mainly late July to September. Always check weather forecasts and ferry schedules (especially for outer islands) before trips—attractions may close during typhoons.
3. Recommended Itinerary
Classic 1-Day Trip (Must-See Highlights)
Morning:
Head straight to Xian Dieyan Scenic Area (includes Da Sha'ao Beach and Nanpaotai Mountain). Highlights: Walk the thrilling coastal cliff path, marvel at unique rock formations, explore military tunnels (unique experience), and climb Nanpaotai Mountain for breathtaking sea views. Duration: ~3-4 hours.
Noon:
Enjoy authentic seafood lunch near the scenic area or at Dong'ao Fishing Village in Dongping Subdistrict.
Afternoon:
Instagram Route: Visit Dongtou Village ("Little Erhai"/Colorful Fishing Village) for vibrant houses and photo ops (location: near International Release Platform).
OR Beach Relaxation: Head to Jiucai'ao Beach for sandplay, wave-chasing, and water sports (paid), perfect for family time.
Evening:
Watch the sunset at Jiucai'ao (if staying), or dine at a seaside stall before heading back.
4. Tidal Flat Foraging (Unique Fishing Fun)
Unlike regular sightseeing, foraging involves hands-on exploration—kids love it! Squish barefoot in the mud to uncover hidden critters, full of surprises and joy.
Safety First: Join experienced locals (book fishing homestay foraging tours) and stay in designated safe zones. Watch for slippery mud, deep pits, or currents. Wear anti-slip boots or old sneakers (barefoot risks cuts).
Tools: Usually provided (buckets, shovels, gloves), but bring your own if preferred.
Cleanup: Rinse hands/feet promptly afterward.
5. Key Tips
Accommodation: Book early in peak season (summer weekends/holidays)—BnBs/hotels sell out fast! Unique stays (Banping Mountain, Dong'ao, Huagang) are especially popular.
Sun/Wind Protection: Strong UV—pack sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, arm sleeves. Bring a windproof jacket for breezy days.
Transport:
Self-Drive: Highly recommended. Reach island attractions via Lingni North Causeway and Five-Island Link Highway.
Public Transit: Buses from Wenzhou South Bus/HSR Station to Dongtou. Use taxis/local buses (check schedules) between spots.
Ferries: Outer islands (e.g., Damen, Luxi) require boats from Dongtou's Yuanjue/Xiaomen piers—confirm schedules (weather-dependent).
Food: Clarify market-price seafood at stalls; opt for local-frequented spots. Must-tries: "Cat Ears" (sweet soup), cuttlefish cakes, sweet potato pancakes, seaweed balls.
