Portland UK is an island off the coast of Dorset, England, connected to the mainland by Chesil Beach.

Geography

The island is joined to the mainland by a narrow strip of land (a tombolo)in this case, the pebble ridge of Chesil Beach.

Steeped in maritime history and heritage, there are museums, castles and not one but three lighthouses to explore.

Portland Museum: Located in a historic stone cottage, it covers the island's history of quarrying, smuggling, and maritime life.

Portland Harbour is one of the largest man made harbours in the world.
